The top US commander in Afghanistan alleges Russia, Iran working to undermine US, NATO efforts in Afghanistan
General John Nicholson, Commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan told lawmakers during a Congressional hearing that Russia and Iran are supporting the Taliban in part to undermine the US and NATO mission to attain peace and stability in the war-torn nation.
According to Gen. Nicholson, the Russians) have begun to publicly legitimise the Taliban by promoting the narrative that the Taliban are fighting Islamic State and the Afghan government is not as fighting Islamic State .
Senator Jeanne Shaheen in the same meeting asked about the recent spurt in relationship between Russia and Pakistan. To this Gen. Nicholson replied saying there is evidence of additional engagement by the Russians with Pakistan. There was recently a training exercise conducted in Pakistan with Russian troops.
Senator John McCain, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee alleged that both Russia and Iran are meddling in Afghanistan.
